Leonia Lives: Charley Ryan, Rock 'n' Bowl impresario

Charley Ryan and his wife Theresa Norris moved to Leonia in 1999. At the time, Charley was operating Wetlands Preserve (rock club/environmental center) in Tribeca with Peter Shapiro, his co-founding partner at Brooklyn Bowl, which opened in 2009. A Dartmouth College graduate, he served on the Leonia Council from 2004-2006 and served as president of the Second Sunday concert series.

The 1990s were the best consistent decade of rock music since the 1960s. Bands heavily influenced by punk took over the early 90s, bringing us the so-called "Seattle sound." The 90s also saw an explosion of techno bands. The decade also was a decade for women, not just in all-female bands, but there were more women playing alongside male bandmates.
